Youth Outdoor Field Specialist

The AmeriCorps Youth Outdoors Field Specialist (ages 18-25 preferred) position provides training, education, coordination and leadership to Youth Outdoors corpsmembers and ensures a positive and safe experience for all participants. This position reports to the Youth Outdoors Program Manager. The Field Specialist will help fellow members achieve personal and program success through the principles of team work and service-learning. Specialists must be responsive to instructions and feedback delivered by the Field Coordinator, Regional Staff, and project hosts from land management agencies such as the DNR, USFWS, NPS, SWCDs, cities and counties.

This is a full-time commitment for a year-long AmeriCorps service term. The member will receive a monthly stipend and an education award upon successful completion of the term that may be used for education expenses or to repay qualified student loans.

Term dates and schedule:
Term: January 2023
Schedule: 40 hours per week, schedule varies and includes after-school and weekend shifts

Location: Housing is not provided by the Corps. Member must secure their own housing near service location.

Qualifications:
Working knowledge of conservation project management from a variety of disciplines such as timber stand improvement, trail construction, GIS/GPS surveying, rain garden installation, habitat restoration and prairie/forest management.
Experience with hand and power tool safety, use and small engine repair.
Experience in tree felling and chainsaw operations, construction and mechanical skills.
Current First Aid/CPR certificate or better.
Previous experience in a leadership role, including coordinating and implementing trainings.
Effective communication skills and ability to multi-task and be flexible in responsibilities.
Flexible schedule to accommodate week-long out of town assignments and month-long or extended emergency response.
Previous AmeriCorps experience and four-year degree in a related field is preferred.

Requirements:
18-25 years old.
Must be a US Citizen, US National or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the US.
Must pass the National Sex Offender Public Registry and criminal history check. Pass is defined as no positive hits on the NSOPR and no history of violent offenses on the criminal history check.
Full term of service must be completed in order to receive the education award.
Must possess a valid drivers license and safe driving record (no major moving violations or DUIs in the past five years).
