2020 Scheuer Land Management Internship

Mohonk Preserve is one of Americas largest and most historic private, non-profit nature preserves, protecting and managing over 8,000 acres of the Northern Shawangunk Mountains in Ulster County, New York.

The Preserve has a century long legacy of conducting ecological research and environmental education. It offers over 75 miles of carriage roads and trails for hiking, running, biking, horseback riding, skiing, and outdoor exploration. It is the home of one of Americas premier rock-climbing destinations and, it is through our programs and activities that the Preserve welcomes over 300,000 visitors annually who utilize the land for research, education, and recreation. Thom Scheuer, the beloved Head Ranger of Mohonk Preserve from 1972 until his death in 1999, dedicated his work and life to protecting and maintaining the Preserve as a place for world-class outdoor enjoyment within a high-quality ecosystem. Thoms timeless legacy is that of land stewardship that involves people in a common land ethic.

The 2020 Scheuer Land Management Internship will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to work within our Land Stewardship and Land Protection programs. The 2020 Scheuer Intern will gain experience working alongside our Ranger team focusing on trail maintenance and restoration of areas of the Preserve impacted by high visitation. The intern will also assist with monitoring the Preserves boundary, collecting GPS and GIS data. The position will largely consist of field work and the applicant should be comfortable with long days in the field and utilizing various GPS data collection methods. Additional training will be provided in GIS data collection, analysis and reporting, along with Wilderness First Aid & Emergency Response.

Special Project: The intern and their supervisor will design a specific land stewardship project focusing on our visitor experiences.
